  14. 1. What is Folder･Icon･Opener?

  16. Folder･Icon･Opener is a simple utility which helps editing custom folder icon. It is easy to use for anyone but it will cause rather dangerous doings, especially  for beginners. Use it at your own risk. The author dedicates Folder･Icon･Opener to the Macintosh heavy-user only.

When you edit a file which has custom icon, it is easy because you just open by dragging and dropping it to an application such as ResEdit but when you want to edit a folder icon, you wonﾕt be able to open by  dragging and dropping. Use ﾒOpenﾓ dialog and select a file named ﾒIconﾓ which has invisible attribute. Folder･Icon･Opener provides a shortcut of this procedure.

  21. 2. How to use it?

  23. 2.1. Basic Operation
  24. Just drag and drop a folder which has custom icon and you want edit it onto the Folder･Icon･Opener. It then searches a hidden icon file and pass it to your  icon editor application. Then you can edit the icon data using the application.

  26. When you finish editing, you wonﾕt see yet the new icon on your desktop since Finder still holds the old icon data. Restart the system and you will find the new icon appearance.

  28. 2.2. Copying Icon Data to Clipboard
  29. Drag and drop a folder which has custom icon while holding command key onto the Folder･Icon･Opener. It then copies the custom icon data into clipboard. You can edit it using general painting applications.This feature requres System 7.5 or greater.

  32. 3. How to designate your favorite icon editor

  34. Folder･Icon･Opener assumes that the default icon editor is ResEdit but you can designate your favorite one just by putting an alias of the editor into the folder called ﾒIcon･Editor･Folder.ﾓ This folder should be located at the same place that Folder･Icon･Opener resides.

  57. A Macintosh which has 68020 or greater and/or a Power Macintosh.
  58. Folder･Icon･Opener is Fat Binary. It runs in native either on a 68K or a PPC.
